Emsella: The New Surgery-Free Solution for Female Urinary Incontinence

You’ve probably laughed with your girlfriends more than once about the issues you experience as you get older. But have you ever discussed the issue of urinary incontinence? This common condition affects 4 in 10 women over age 65, but it isn’t a necessary symptom of aging.
If you deal with this issue because of stress on the body (e.g., when you sneeze or cough) or you’re unable to hold your urine, there’s a way to manage the problem and even make it disappear. This treatment is called Emsella®.
At Avery Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, we offer Emsella as one of our many treatment options for women of all ages. Our providers would be happy to discuss this noninvasive, surgery-free procedure with you today.
Urinary incontinence 101
Urinary incontinence affects men as well, but it’s extremely common in women because of the female reproductive system. Certain events, including childbirth and menopause, can affect how the bladder works. The urethra and the muscles in the pelvic floor can also be affected.
Many women feel that living with urinary incontinence is just a part of aging. But this isn’t true. A number of treatments can help you manage it. If home remedies don’t work, we can discuss your medical options, including the revolutionary treatment, Emsella.
Emsella: What it is and how it works
Emsella is FDA-approved to treat urinary incontinence. The procedure doesn’t require surgical intervention or even a shot. Instead, it uses electromagnetic waves to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, allowing you to regain control over your bladder.
The process is easy, customizable, and pain-free. We also recommend Emsella because it’s known to cause few side effects, and its benefits typically last up to a year before additional appointments may be required.
What to expect at your Emsella appointment
First, you need an evaluation so our providers can determine if Emsella is right for you. That may involve a test of your bladder function. Afterward, we can tell you if Emsella treatment is the best choice for your needs.
When you show up for your treatment, you sit on the Emsella chair. Wear loose-fitting pants or shorts that don’t have buckles, zippers, or buttons. Your treatment likely lasts about 30 minutes, and you may feel a tugging or tingling sensation during the process.
Emsella isn’t painful, and most patients are comfortable during their treatment.
You may need as many as two treatments a week for three straight weeks. After this, you can discuss with your provider whether you need follow-up appointments. Most patients experience better urinary control after just one treatment.
Who needs Emsella
Both men and women can benefit from Emsella. But since we’re an OB/GYN clinic, we treat patients with female anatomy who struggle with stress-related urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder.
Remember, urinary incontinence can happen at any age. Although it’s more common as you get older, it’s not something you need to live with.
